The triumphant success of the premiere performance in 1915 at the Johann Strauss-Theater in Vienna has made The Queen of Chardash one of the most beloved operettas around the world today. The focus of the production is the flight of feelings between the variety singer Silva Varescu and Edwin, the son of parents from the old Austrian aristocracy. The other vivid characters present a gallery of images of the "good old days" (bel epok), an era of spiritual upsurge between the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 and the First World War (1914-1918). The atmosphere of "The Queen of Chardache" breaks away from the prosaic everyday life, from the noise and chaos, from people's suffering and faithlessness. The musical performances epitomise the best of Kalman's work: 'Do you remember...', 'Strange thing is love, with a sharp knife it pierces!' 'Women, women, ah angels are they...' 'Give me a kiss, dear, give it quickly, paradise itself is dull without you!'...
