The production is in the spirit of romantic drama. The action takes place in Rome on the border between the 18th and 19th centuries, when the world was shaken by the impulse for democracy. The sense of historical authenticity is reinforced by means of modern multimedia effects. The themes of love, freedom, self-sacrifice, dictatorship and legitimised violence are elevated to the rank of a limiting generalisation of the tragic contrasts in human nature.
