MISA TANGO

Concert
MISA TANGO

The opera's now-traditional spring concert by the chorus continues the lineage of recent years in which it presents modern work aimed at a variety of ages and aesthetic tastes.

On May 19, 2023 at 7 pm at the Opera House , under the direction of Mladen Stanev, "Missa Tango" by contemporary Argentine composer Martin Palmeri was performed.

Misatango (also known as the Mesa of Buenos Aires) is a captivating work woven from the rhythms, melodies and passion of tango - the fiery dance through which we can express our feelings, every momentary state and emotion in life, even our religious devotion. The universality of this popular and beloved musical language reaches us all easily and makes us empathetic. It is written over the Latin text of the mass - a clear message that human sensuality is expressed in everything - in the ups and downs of life, in love and suffering, and in the indispensable part of everything - our faith, which is clothed here in the very human temperament of everyday life and celebration. The work was created in 2006 and since then has gained a surpassing popularity far beyond the borders of its homeland. In addition to having passed through the repertoire of almost all philharmonic ensembles, each year a festival is held in various European capitals under the name of Misatango (this year the centre of the event is Berlin), which brings together numerous performers and audiences from all over the world.

Martin Palmeri was born in Buenos Aires in 1965. Educated as an instrumentalist, singer, choral and orchestral conductor and composer, he has an extremely rich output of both traditional dance forms and large-scale orchestral and cantata-oratorio works. He spends almost half of his time on concert tours in Europe, very often engaged in the interpretation as pianist and conductor of this particular work.

The spatial choral numbers of the masses, in which the polyphonic elements of early music are intertwined with the sparkling, decidedly genre-specific sonority of the tango, are highlighted by their specific partner, the instrumental accompaniment. Chamber orchestra composed of concertmaster Emil Sheytanov, Konstantin Kosev - violin, Yulia Kirova - viola, Ani Mikhailova - cello, Stanislav Georgiev - double bass, piano - Manuela Manolova, and the specific Argentine instrument bandoneon, close in sound to the accordion, more common in European countries. The performer of this instrument in the concert is Georgi Ivanov - a graduate of the Academy of Music and Dance Art - Plovdiv, a student of our distinguished performer Angel Marinov. The solo mezzo-soprano part is entrusted to Dobrinka Koynova-Biermann, a long-time artist-choir member at the Lüneburg Theatre, Germany, and vocal pedagogue of the student choir at the theatre, and recently - a member of the Stara Zagora State Opera ensemble. In this work she is also credited as choirmaster in the preparation of the work
